EGEE II Project

Ian Bird gave a presentation on the status of the EGEE II Project and its expansion into other domains. The EGG supports the continuation of this European initiative, which has become a standard Grid platform in Europe. The software has matured to a point, where it can be deployed and used for many computing purposes. All Eiroforum members are encouraged to make use of this platform. The EGG encourages the EGEE II projects to foster stronger ties with the software/hardware industry on a much more hands-on basis.

Grid-related industrial opportunities

Matti Heikkurinen gave a presentation on how EIROs could get involved in exchanging know-how with industry, which is summarised in his slides. The quick scratch-the-surface survey for Finpro that was mentioned can be found from http://snipurl.com/mb29 . Finpro was planning on conducting a broader survey of the ICT-related opportunities with the big science centres. Further investigation on their results is being undertaken.

Individual Reports from the EIROs:

• ESRF and ILL have setup parallel Condor Clusters and have started testing those with scientific applications. Some experimentation that began late last year with CERN in setting up a GLite testbed is still ongoing.

• ESO has signed up to become a registration authority (RA) for certificates in the DFN-PKI Certification Authority (CA) service. DFN is one of two Grid CAs for Germany that is recognised by EUGridPMA, which in turn coordinates grid authentication in e-Science in Europe. DFN Grid CA certificates are accepted worldwide by Grid services. ESO continues to experiment with workflow tools for the VO and selecting the right middleware. It is proposed that ESO take a lead in identifying EGEE components that can benefit the Euro-VO initiative.

• ESA's Grid activities have been refocused on establishing an infrastructure that can be use by multiple missions within a discipline. This is clearly the trend being followed by ESAC (European Space Astrophysics Centre) in Villafranca, Spain for astrophysical space missions and at ESRIN for Earth Observation missions. EGEE components are already being used by EO projects within ESA.

• EBI is using the EMBRACE platform. EGEE components may be also useful here to experiment with.

• CERN continues to take the lead in running the EGEE project and establishing a High Energy Physics infrastructure across Europe.

The EduRoam^? project was briefly discussed. It was felt that due to the diverse infrastructures and scientific communities that exist within the EIROs, the EduRoam^? approach was not considered appropriate. From all EIRO's only one (EFDA) were using this protocol. Due to network security constraints that also involved industry (typically at ESA), EduRoam^? could not be supported.

Next Meeting

It was agreed that the next face-to-face meeting will be held at ILL in Grenoble in late September or early October.

  • Discussion of how Grid Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and National Research

• • Presentation of advanced firewalling appliances that understand grid protocols.
  • Discussion of the relative merits of various authorization mechanisms - particularly interoperability between policy embedded in certificates as implemented in the Globus CAS service and the authorization using SAML based services.
