Computer Setup for GOODS Science Demo at JBO 01/03

System Requirements

So that we can see where the requirements are coming from, and so resolve conflicts between them, let us try a matrix approach (MCH):

RAM Disk CPU Display Operating System/Platform Network
ACE Client 256+ 10 GB+ 500M+ for quick UI 1024x768 Java 1.4+ (1) low (if using GOODS) can work offline with locally installed ACE
ACE Server (wrapper) 256+ low 10 GB+ n/a Java 1.4+ (1) high (need to copy in images) can work offline
ACE Server (SExtractor) 256+ low 10 GB+ n/a Linux/Solaris; old ver available for Windows none
Aladin 256+ <1Mb </td> high 1280x1024 Java 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 high (need to copy in images)
SED Tool 10 1 MB 750MHz 800x600 JDK 1.1+ none

(1) Java 1.3 and 1.4 are available on Windows, Linux, Solaris.

  • 1 GB RAM OK
  • 20 GB disk space is this enough? _OK_ * No, 200 GB please (minimum 100GB) <-- what drives this? Is this for each machine? (MCH)
  • display resolution >= 1280*1024 pixel for monitor OK
  • display resolution >= 1280*1024 pixel for beamer will probably need to hire one unless anyone can lend one
  • Windows XP for core demo machine OK
  • investigate use of JBO Linux machines for tutorial OK, these will be networked, please let Anita/Ant know what software is required
  • Aladin has some problem in the "load" windows with jdk1.4.1 * use JVM 1.3, or the VM packaged with Aladin
  • Demo machines: need 500-1.5GHz. Memory: things run best with >=1 GB RAM, but it works also with 512 or 256 MB

questions

  • Is Solaris OK for the rest of the demo software for tutorial machines - we have some linux, some unix - , or should it be linux only, and if so is there any version restriction?

* Linux only please, because multiple configurations will mean multiple problems. * A single distribution of Linux for simplicity, with a single window manager (KDE preferred)

  • Can the software (including Aladin demo version) be held locally on our system or must it be on each machine separately? (normally all our software is installed and maitained centrally)

* Aladin can be installed centrally for the linux network, but it must be tested.

Network

  • Aladin functions off-line after ~30 sec network timeout at startup * use the "-local" switch to avoid this timeout (it's in the FAQ)

* also SED and ACE work off-line

  • for on-line tutorial a bandwidth of >= 1Mbit/s/demo_station is desirable, but datasets with reasonable download time should be preselected and described here.

Resources available

  • Some Linux, some Solaris
  • Network:
    • Bandwidth ??
    • Likely load by others on the day ??
