Maximizing the Joint Use of the ESO Science Archive and the XMM/CXO X-ray Archives
C. Mullis (ESO), P. Rosati (ESO)
23 April 2003
Motivation
The ESO Science Archive represents the most sophisticated collection
of observations in ground-based astronomy. Now in orbit for nearly
four years, the XMM and Chandra X-ray observatories have amassed large
numbers of high-energy observations of unprecedented spatial and
spectral resolution. With X-ray astronomy's heritage of strong data
archives, the XMM and Chandra databases are fast becoming exciting
resources for archival science. Furthermore, new data reduction
pipelines are making these data more accessible to the non-expert
researcher (e.g. XAssist package for XMM/CXO data and the EIS pipeline
for FORS2/SOFI/WFI data).
In light of these circumstances, we seek to quantify the amount of sky
that has been observed by both ESO instruments and the current
generation of X-ray telescopes. In addition to high profile ESO+XMM
programs such as the EIS survey of XMM fields and the XMM Large-Scale
Structure Survey, how many other jointly-observed cases are there due
to coordinated optical/X-ray programs or random pointed observations?
Given sufficient overlaps, we will 1) design and implement a user
interface to locate such joint datasets, and 2) use this apparatus in
a science demonstration program. The envisioned ESO+XMM/CXO
interface is anticipated to foster innovative programs in a variety of
fields (e.g. active galactic nuclei, clusters of galaxies, etc.) and
serve as a pathfinder for similar AVO technology development.
Preliminary Plan
- Cross correlate the XMM/CXO data archive with the ESO Science
Archive. For example,
ESO FORS1/2 imaging observations vs. XMM/Chandra
ESO FORS2 spectroscopy observations vs. XMM/Chandra
ESO SOFI observations vs. XMM/Chandra
ESO WFI observations vs. XMM/Chandra
- Build the ESO+XMM/CXC interface
(contingent the results of part 1)
- Science Demonstrations
Rapid Construction of a High-z Sample of Galaxy Clusters
Joint Optical/X-ray AGN Database
