Orion notes

Orion Nebula - some possible uses for non-optical data which are accessible.

Aladin suggests that there are many available data on the Orion Nebula incl. the MERLIN XMM and ISO data already mentioned plus HST and CHANDRA in fields which cover the Trapezium and the Proplyd region. Also the large size of the region means that low-res surveys like NVSS might be useful.

The Aladin Orion Nebula Screenshot shows part of the XMM image; MERLIN Chandra and HST also already; however the full MERLIN field isn't yet (covers approx whole area shown) and the HST astrometry probably needs attention. Also ISO spectra and ISOCAM although I could not find direct data link. Many catalogues also.

Bottom line is that there are X-ray, optical (ESO?), IR/mm and radio detections of the Trapezium stars and proplyds (not sure about ISO proplyds) but not full multi-wavelength correlations e.g. between radio and X-ray Proplyds, location of emission of various kinds in Trapezium system. One question is the survival of the Proplyds which are being ablated by the Trapezium stars. The exact character of the latter and hence their lifetimes determines whether the Proplyds will survive long enough to e.g. form planets. The multi-wavelength stuff will help to characterise the hot stars and suggest the emission mechanisms and hence destruction/evolution of the Proplyds, ISO lines e.g. silicates, ices, maybe gas abundance in discs will add even more...

In the Trapezium, Theta 1 Ori A is an enigmatic system which seems to have X-ray e.g. 2003ApJ...595...365S but no-one seems to have yet related this to the other material on the nature of this system. The Trapezium stars are visible at most wavelengths e.g. ISO Spectra 2000A&A...358..708C; radio 2002evlb.conf..259G

The Proplyds have also been extensively observed, and some are X-ray 2001ApJ...549..441S (catalogue in Vizier) and radio sources e.g. 2002ApJ...566..315H as well as the famous HST observations 1998AJ....115..263O 1996AJ....111..846O (catalogue in Vizier)
