AVO Prototype 2003

This version is obsolete. Go here for the latest release.

Here's advice on how to install and run the demonstration software. In particular it includes notes on how to reproduce the demonstration and tutorials as shown in Jodrell. It's the recommended starting point for exploring the features of the AVO prototype.

Conceptual Overview

The AVO 1st year demonstration was held at Jodrell Bank Observatory on Monday Jan 20, 2003. At this event the prototype was introduced via presentations and by live demo of the prototype capabilities and functionality.

This demonstration software was supported for a 2 month period, starting February 2003.

Installation Instructions

Old versions of the prototype are not supported and details of the user interface shown in the tutorial slides might have changed.

Download either both tarballs (Linux) OR the 2 zip archives (Windows) to the directory where you've just installed the AVO prototype. If the installation directory is /home/YourAccount/Avo then download the files into /home/YourAccount and inflate them. It'll create a subdirectory called ./demo_extras. Recent Windows File Managers usually support zip format. On a Linux terminal enter

cd /home/YourAccount/Avo
gunzip -c demo_extras.tar.gz | tar xfo -
gunzip -c demo_extras_data.tar.gz | tar xfo -

A set of supporting files contains tables, scripts, and filter definitions. This will allow you to reproduce the cases presented in the tutorial, but they are not part of the standard installation.

For example, there are tables containing information on the currently known transients and high-Z objects in the GOODS CDF-S field. These files are useful starting points for defining your own scripts, and filters.

Running the Demo

Additional multi-wavelength (optical, X-ray to radio) demo using HFF/HDF(N)

This is a Use Case which is complementary to the main demonstration.

The scripts reference external data, so make sure to be on-line. More info is accessible via the HFF/HDF(N) sections in JBO Demo Core Data and comments in the scripts.

Manuals, Docs

The software has been tested on Linux (Redhat V7.2 and V8.0) and on Windows XP.
