Background to point 3 from Jon Farthing e-mail of 24/10/07
"Regarding the proposed changes in words to our charter. They (the coordination group / directorate) are already aware that we are discussing things like software licenses, IT security policies etc and encourage this as a natural extension of our activities. However as long as we think that GRID is the major topic of our group they suggest that we do not change the words of the charter yet, rather that we discuss this further and report back in November 2008. At that time it might be appropriate to change the charter substantially and change the name of the group etc, or we might decide to continue as we are. So they suggest that the final sentence in the final paragraph of Mark's report (see
below) be removed.
Finally the EGG continues to share experience and best practices more generally in IT where these are relevant. One issue concerns software licensing and a maximum amount of information from the EIROs is being collated. Remove this sentence: In this context, a slightly modified group charter is proposed (see minutes).
This change made sense and did not impact on our ongoing activites so we agreed to it.
So, please think about this. Should we restrict ourselves exclusively to GRID-related activities, or extend to e-Science / e-Research in general or extend further to general IT issues. We can allow presentations from each of you at the meeting or if you would like to send me your thoughts in advance I will collate them and produce a few slides to promote discussion.
