R. Mullis -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Cross correlation of XMM/CXO data archives with ESO Science Archive - Procedures in place to poll the XMM/CXO archives for lists of publicly available datasets ===> X-ray field positions (RA,DEC,etc) circa May 2003 ...684 datasets (unique RA,DEC) in XMM archive ...433 datasets (unique RA,DEC) in Chandra archive - Procedures developed to cross-correlate the positions of the X-ray datasets (RA,DEC) with the ESO archive via QUERATOR ===> jointly observed ESO+X-ray field positions Issues: - completeness of QUERATOR ...currently includes WFI,FORS1,FORS2 ...would be good to have EMMI, SUSI, and SOFI b/c many survey programs are executed with these instruments 2) ESO + XMM/CXO Interface Present work has focused on data flow, data reduction, source detection/characterization and database construction (i.e. the fundamental elements of the ESO/X-ray interface): - Developed visualization tools (e.g useful to for field selection in archival science programs) plot/filter data in celestial coordinates plot/filter data in Galactic coordinates - Procedures developed to automatically transfer X-ray data from remote archives to local cache. - Testing XASSIST top-level data reduction package (handles processing of both XMM and CXO data) software installed and operating identified shortcomings in XMM procedures and interacted with software developer to fix assessment of output quality continues... - Procedures developed to merge X-ray source lists into master database - Developing post-processing procedures... generate X-ray images from photon lists adaptive smooth X-ray images create combined X-ray + optical images Yet to be addressed is format of the actual ESO/X-ray interace. Potential elements include: - "clean" X-ray images for ESO observations for immediate visualization of optical+X-ray view - X-ray source database for ESO observations (RA,DEC, X-ray attributes, etc) Issues: - access to pipelined ESO images (EIS?) - actual ESO/X-ray interface 3) Science Demonstration - Existing infrastructure has been tested and used in support of a search for galaxy clusters at z>1. ...candidates selected based on extended X-ray emission in XMM data ...X-ray + DSS imaging used to reject nearby systems z < 0.5 ...ulimately DSS will be replaced with ESO imaging Issues: - need actual ESO/X-ray interface to "real" demo/test @
