- (self) introduction of members

- Intoductory Presentation (P. Quinn)
three year Phase A study funded by European Commission
partners: ESO, ST-ECF, Astrogrid, CDS, Terapix, Jodrell Banks
5 Mio Euro, 18 staff including 9 new positions
need for science domonstrator within about a year

- US effort NVO, (Bob Hanisch)
NSF funded, 17 participating oranisations
US$ 10 Mio for 5 years
plan to show demonstration of scientifc case during AAS Jan 03rd 2003
US Science Definition Team asked to provide roadmap by end of March in time
for NASA FY 04 funding request

-AVO Introduction (P. Benvenuti)
terms of reference for AVO-SWG
important issues: data quality control, find dividing line between
responsibilities of AVO and Sci users
review progress for phase B and onward

immediate goals:
-define one to three test cases
- developd of list of priorities in terms of data quality

Science Reference Mission

pro: gives missioon to the AVO
	focus on achievable task but
AVO has to have a broad scope
the "you could do this now" problem encountered by US Sci Definition Team
(Hanisch) ende with project to enhance efficiency.

AVO scope/data criteria:

-time axis, lambda axis, spatial axis, polarisation

- one sci test case for each sci subject, but available sky coverage including
radio, Orion or Sgr region

- include simulated data and theory

- incorporate/make accessible existing knowledge, Literature

- object census, index, object classification, description
- data model for object

- analysis tools

- multi-object spectroscopy but dependent on Lambda range, X-ra has x,y,
Energy and time in data cube

- required are guidelines for charaterisation of objects

democratization of archives, plea for distributed archives, limited data
storage space in small university.

Two Approaches

- select area in the sky, with full lambda coverage, but no pre-defined sci
goal

-select existing multi-wavelength sci program with large volume of public data
use as example (uniqueness/ competition ?)

GOODS - Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey See Fosbury et al.
ESO Messenger

ELAIS - ISO project plus other data (see one-oage summary Mann & Walton

- call for stellar astrophys sci case, field in Orion, Sgr

- ESO public surveys 110 stellar fields, LMC, bulge, pre-Flames usually three
filters

- one deep narrow (cosmology), one shallow wide (galactic)

- call for planetary system test case
NEO orbital history - but too close to existing Astrovirtel proposal
make all Jupiter data accessible to better prepare for extra-solar planets

- call for test case on cross-lambda source matching
US ClassX, NVO demonstrator NASA funded find counterparts to X-ray sources
pro: cross-correlating tool will find wide support from community
con: XMM survey has similar aim

- any deep extragalactic survey can be used for study of galactic halo stars
and/or Kuiper belt objects

Q :who are we aiming at ? sci community or funding agencies ?
A: primarily at sci community, nice sci demonstrator and community support
will help secure further funding

- spin offs, HST has examples of GO project which were more successful than
Key Projects

- who might be more interested in AVO demonstrator ?
existing group or not yet organized persons interested in a given topic

SRM candidates

- deep cosmology
GOODS, ELAIS can we accomodate both or do we need to choose ?

- stellar, ISM, galactic case
Orion

- wide shallow

- Magellanic clouds to link galactic-extragalactic

Issue of "Foreign" archives, can they be included, at what cost ?

Is core AVO restricted to data administered by the six partners ?

=======================
Afternoon

- each member is asked to give "favourite" sci example, what project you
like to do with AVO ? report back to Piero within two weeks

Science Quality

- Astrometry
- Photometry
- Spectral Extraction
- Image quality
PSF, FF, spatial- time frequencies
- literature - data connection
- instant info on data and calib it came from
- desribe raw data fully
- engineering data to go with sci data to describe instrument status

example: WFPC2 and ISAAC images to be combined
WCS to start
astrometry, which standard to choose ? USNO ?
"easy" if objects in common in the field but say HST and VLA data
should there be an AVO procedure to bring everything to the same grid ? or
redo things every time ?

- toolbox of procedures

- astrometry: AVO should define procedures and archives should use a common
procedure, provide clear description where the astrometry comes from: USNO,
GSC I, II, telescope pointing

- requirements will evolve, so the meta data will evolve
--> a virtual instrument

Astrometry: P.Leahy & W. Voges & contact with NVO

Photometry: didn't catch the names

- filter transmission curves not just B or V filter as description
but U band depends on atmosphere

- AVO should set rules fro future broad-band photometry but not for existing
archive's content

-wish list: spectral extraction, association image and sepctrum, extract
all spectra and ID lines, plus description of slit parameters etc.
bad pixel masks, cosmic ray reject/flag, quality file
lot of this info is nor archived AVO to set standards for data description
for future but not for old archives

- quick look non-optimal extraction with high level of calibration
- optimal extraction is responsibility of scientist, VIMOS will provide
spectral pre-view

- link observations/data with Literature today only link object - literature
exists

- journals could give additional keywords

- AVO label on data products/ quality label

- AVO data products ? catalogues ?
natural outcome of e.g. astrometry virtual instrument, but needs to be safed,
archived and characterized

-What is the minimum description required for a given data set ?

-What about interferometric and AO data ?

- AVO user contributed products:
extend lifetime of product, CDS static collection -- AVO needs to be dynamic
problem of accountability, quality control, NVO paradigm says this will
 be growing organically within NVO

Conclusion:

- feedback on favourite AVO project, selection of SRM

- minutes within two weeks

- next face to face meeting around June conference

- propose additional topics for discussion

- evaluate need for new/additional data analysis/statistical tools

- distributed data, cross-correlation leaving data in place

- register for June conference
