EFDA-JET Report to the EGG Meeting 05/10/06 at ILL
Fusion News that may be interesting to EGG
ITER
Norbert Holtkamp has been appointed PDDG (Principal Deputy Director General) of ITER. He is ex-SNS and ex-DESY. We expect more cross-over / collaboration with the HEP community as a result. The ITER management team should be in place by Spring 2007. Norbert Holtkamp's presentation to the recent SOFT (Symposium on Fusion Technology) (http://soft2006.materials.pl/index.html) conference can be seen at http://fire.pppl.gov/holtkamp_iter_soft06.ppt. It is unlikely that there will be much GRID activity within the ITER International Team for several years. Modelling work etc is expected to continue to be carried out by the 7 partners - EFDA in the case of the EU -.
EU-JP Broader Approach (BA) to Fusion
The BA includes a super computer for modelling of burning plasmas - see http://fire.pppl.gov/matsuda_broad_app_soft06.ppt, also from SOFT -. This should go into production in ~2012.
Fusion VO
There details of the fusion VO within the LHC Grid can be seen at http://grid.bifi.unizar.es/egee/fusion-vo/. The list of partners, including EFDA-JET, can be seen at http://grid.bifi.unizar.es/egee/fusion-vo/partners.html
The EFDA-JET Grid Cluster has just gone into production. It consists of 12 dual core Athlon 4600+ processors. The first runs as a Storage Element, providing 1.5 Tb of disk storage, the second is a Compute Element, acting as a scheduler for the Worker Nodes (nodes 5 to 12). The third node is a "MON box", that provides information on the state of the cluster to the rest of the grid, and the fourth node is a "User Interface" node. The User Interface Node is for users to log on to, so they can prepare and submit jobs, and finally to retrieve their output. We hope to increase the size of the cluster in the near future.
David Robson who is the RO for the EFDA-JET cluster has written two documents that may be of interest to other members of the EGG. The first, JDN/H(06)39 "Running GRID jobs from JET" is aimed at helping end-users to get started using the GRID. The second, JDN/H(06)42 "Installation Issues for the FEDA-JET GRID site" is aimed at system administrators who may install EGEE-based clusters in the future. It lists some of the problems we experienced at JET setting up the cluster. Both of these documents have been uploaded to the EGG Wiki site.
